Cultivate Your Soil
Often in the Bible, people are compared to crops. Apostle Paul uses this reference in 1 Corinthians 3:6 when he states that he planted the seed, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. In Matthew 13 there are different references that range from sowing and reaping to wheat and tares and faith is even compared to a mustard seed. There are many others, but these few examples show the point that the Bible often compares people to crops. Knowing this, it is important to know, that before planting crops, a good farmer or gardener will cultivate the soil first. Cultivating the soil improves the soil prior to whatever is going to be planted. Cultivating the soil in our lives is no different. Cultivating the soil in our lives could be thought of as getting rid of the distractions that prevent us from getting closer to God. What distractions do we need to get rid of? We must ask ourselves "what thing is taking God's place in my mind today"? Maybe it's your favorite TV show or your favorite video game. Or maybe it's just you enjoying doing "nothing" a little to much. Whatever the case let's take inventory today and cultivate our soil so that the Word of God is able to take deep root in our hearts.
