The Fear of the Lord Pt.4
Proverbs 22:1-4
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
2 The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
4 By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.
I love these four verses. It speaks specifically about the character we should have. Verse 1 tells us that a good name is better than riches. What I like most about this is that what each individual determines whether or not their name is good. My parents can't make a good name for me nor can they make a bad name for me. I can set a good or bad template for my children, but ultimately, they will be known by their name and not mine.
Verse 4 is important to note as well. Again the fear of the Lord is mentioned and this time it is revealed that "humility" is attached to it. The fear of the Lord is mentioned 27 times in the Bible. That's quite a bit for a phrase comprised of 5 words. This just emphasizes the importance of it. Verse 4 also states that by humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. That means, that true riches, honour, and life comes through having humility and the fear of the Lord.
One thing that I enjoy about The Bible, of which Proverbs does well, is it gives us clear options. We can do one thing, which leads to this.....or we can do another thing which leads to that. We make the choice!
